Wittman Hosts Ceremony to Recognize Vietnam Vets

STAFFORD, Va. - In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-1) hosted a Vietnam Veterans Recognition Ceremony at Quantico Marine Corps Base on Saturday.

More than 100 Vietnam-era veterans from Virginia’s First Congressional District were recognized at the event, which also featured remarks from Command Sgt. Maj. Jimmie W. Spencer, USA, Ret., and Lt. Gen. George R. Christmas, USMC, Ret., as well as a performance by the U.S. Marine Corps Band and a color guard.

“The contributions of those who served in Vietnam have too often been overlooked in the last 50 years,” Wittman said. “It was an honor to be in the presence of these great citizens who served so selflessly, and also to remember what our servicemembers and our nation faced during that time. This event was an opportunity to thank our brave men and women that served this nation in the Vietnam War and to remember that we as a nation should never forget the way our veterans were treated, and commit to ensure that this never happens again. Our region is home to many Vietnam-era veterans, and while official Vietnam War Commemoration events provide a tremendous opportunity to personally recognize them, we must continue to thank and honor all of those who served each and every day.”

Wittman plans to host additional recognition ceremonies elsewhere in the First Congressional District in the coming year. To learn more about the Vietnam War Commemoration, please visit: http://www.vietnamwar50th.com/.
