Weekly Update: Honoring Our Heroes
By Congressman Rob Wittman
May 28, 2018

Virginia’s First District is a region with a strong military history, where battles have been fought in the past and in which many of our brave men and women are currently being trained to become part of the finest fighting force on the planet.

Memorial Day gives us the distinct opportunity to honor our fallen heroes, and to remember those who gave “the last full measure of devotion” so that we might go on living in the absence of fear. Most of these men and women were young when they died, and as Ronald Reagan said, they gave up two lives, “the one they were living and the one they would have lived.” Our gratitude belongs to them—to those who fought for something they considered more important than life.

Too many of us have relatives or ancestors whose dedicated service to this nation ended in tragedy. I believe that it is important to always remember these folks’ brave sacrifices on behalf of our freedoms, and I am humbled to take part in several events this weekend to recognize the fallen. And while I understand the enjoyment that comes with a three-day weekend, I hope that we all remember the powerful significance of this day and the important sacrifices that have been made in defense of our freedoms by the brave men and women of our armed forces, both past and present.

As the Chairman of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Seapower and Projection Forces, I work every day to make sure our warfighters have the resources they need to successfully complete their missions. I am dedicated to supporting our men and women in uniform and will continue to fight for the funding necessary to keep them safe.

This Memorial Day weekend, join me in honoring our service members who never left the battlefield—who gave their all whether on the beaches of Normandy or the deserts of Iraq and Afghanistan—and those who continue to fight for our freedoms every day. And to those servicemen and women currently down range, and their families, we thank each of you for your devotion to this nation and to the cause of liberty. Your bravery, determination, and loyalty will never cease to be a guiding light for this country.
