WASHINGTON – Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-01) released the following statement after voting in favor of the House FY18 Budget, “Building a Better America”:
“Today I voted in favor of a FY18 budget that supports our troops, fiscal responsibility, and economic growth. Now more than ever, we must restore confidence in families, consumers, and businesses so that our economy can grow,” Rep. Wittman said. “The defense budget will help restore readiness, as well as ensure our armed services receive the training, equipment, and compensation they need to successfully complete their missions and fulfill our nation’s obligation to support our men and women in uniform. This resolution also balances the budget within ten years, setting the nation on a fiscally sustainable course. Most importantly, this legislation paves the way for both chambers to get to work on meaningful tax reform. Passing the House budget resolution is a great first step and I hope the Senate quickly follows suit. We need our economy to grow– not our government; today we continue on that path.”
House FY18 Budget, “Building a Better America” includes $621.5 billion in defense discretionary spending and $511 billion in non-defense discretionary spending. It achieves $6.5 trillion in total deficit reduction over ten years and produces a $9 billion surplus in FY 2027. The resolution also contains reconciliation instructions that call for a minimum total of $203 billion in savings over a ten year window - $52 billion of that from the House Ways & Means Committee through implementation of deficit-neutral tax reform.
