Often, simply gathering a variety of stakeholders together to consider important issues – such as effective workforce development programs – can be the catalyst for further growth in those areas. Our teachers and career development counselors, as well as institutions like Germanna, do a great job of preparing our students for rewarding careers, and I am truly excited about the potential of our next generation of leaders.

... “Responsible energy exploration off the Atlantic coast will help to reinforce the lasting stability of our energy supply and strengthen U.S. economic competitiveness for years to come.” I believe that by approaching our energy infrastructure and, indeed, all public policy areas with long-term strategy in mind, we can be more successful as a nation.

Congress and the president must work together to find responsible mechanisms for preventing these astronomical defense cuts from taking place. Our defense budget has already been hit with an unbalanced set of drastic cuts in recent years, and our military leaders have sounded the alarm that our force will be devastated if the sequester is allowed to take place.

Approval of this pipeline is a critical part of an all-of-the-above energy policy, one in which we are exploring all options to ensure energy security in this country. I believe it is possible to both harness our natural resources, as well as preserve them for future generations. I will continue to push for the Keystone XL Pipeline's approval and advocate for energy policies that include responsible development of oil and natural gas as well as alternative forms of energy, such as renewables.

During the Armed Services Committee hearing on Wednesday, I asked simply, “What happens to these detainees after a year?” The answer is clearly not that simple. The intelligence we currently have on these individuals – and the data on the chances of them returning to the battlefield – indicate significant, unjustifiable risk.
