Wittman Statement on Broken Immigration System

Wittman Statement on Broken Immigration System

WASHINGTON –
Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-01) released this statement regarding children of illegal immigrants being separated from their families:

“I am against separating families at the border. I believe that we need long-lasting immigration reform, not just quick fixes and this issue proves that now more than ever, we must find a solution. That is why the House is working tirelessly this week to solve this critical issue. Specifically, we will be drafting immigration legislation which includes language that calls for immigrant minors apprehended at the border to not be separated from their parent or guardian.

“We are a nation of laws, and we must continue to keep Americans safe. We cannot continue to allow dangerous gangs like MS-13 and illegal drugs to take advantage of our southern border. I believe we need to use a comprehensive approach to combating illegal immigration – any legislation must also secure our border, enforce the rule of law, and address DACA recipients.

“The United States has and will continue to be, a compassionate nation. DHS has instructed families seeking asylum that when entering through a port of entry, instead of crossing a dangerous border, they will not be separated. However, it is still against our current laws to attempt to enter our country illegally, and those who do will be apprehended.”

Congressman Rob Wittman represents the 1st District of Virginia. He serves on the House Natural Resources Committee and the House Armed Services Committee, where he is the Chairman of the Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee.
