Wittman Applauds Committee Passage of Legislation that Protects Virginia Sportsmen

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-01), Vice Chairman of House Natural Resources Committee, applauded committee passage of his legislation, the Protecting Access for Hunters and Anglers Act, which would ensure access to affordable tackle and ammunition for sportsmen and women while reinforcing investments in conservation efforts. The next step of the process will be House Floor consideration in the future.

“As an avid outdoorsman, I know that our nation’s hunters and anglers are among the most dedicated conservationists. Yet, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has imposed unjustified regulations that threatened to make the sport unaffordable for many,” said Rep. Wittman. “The Protecting Access for Hunters and Anglers Act ensures that any regulations on the purchase of tackle and ammunition are rooted in science and data. I am proud that this legislation was advanced by the House Natural Resources Committee, and I look forward to continuing my efforts to protect access for sportsmen and women across Virginia.”

“Congressman Wittman is a seasoned outdoorsman who has spent his entire life on our public lands and waters. Thanks to his Protecting Access for Hunters and Anglers Act of 2025, a new generation of sportsmen and women will be able to enjoy affordable access to activities like hunting and fishing. I’d like to thank Congressman Wittman for his work on this issue and look forward to helping move this bill further through the legislative process.” – House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Bruce Westerman

Background:

During the 118th Congress, the Protecting Access for Hunters and Anglers Act passed the U.S. House of Representatives. Congressman Wittman reintroduced the legislation in the 119th Congress in January of 2025. The legislation prevents the Secretary of the Interior and the Secretary of Agriculture from banning the use of lead tackle and ammunition on Federal land or water unless it is determined that their use would negatively impact wildlife or water on a specific unit within their jurisdiction.
