April 3, 2008: Wittman to Form National Race for the Cure Team
Washington, D.C.,
April 3, 2008
(Washington, D.C.) - Congressman Rob Wittman (R-VA) announced today he and his staff will register as a team to participate in the 2008 Susan G. Komen National Race for the Cure in honor of Rep. Jo Ann Davis, who passed away in October 2007 after a two-year battle with breast cancer. "Jo Ann made history as the first female Republican elected from Virginia to the House of Representatives. She was a source of inspiration to all of us, then and now, and my staff and I think that participating as a team in the National Race for the Cure is a fitting way to continue to honor her memory, and all that she did for her district, the Commonwealth, and America," Wittman said. The 19th Annual National Race for the Cure is a 5K run/walk that will be held on June 7th. More than 50,000 participants from across the country, including thousands of breast cancer survivors, will convene on the National Mall to lend their support - and feet - to help Susan G. Komen for the Cure get one step closer to fulfilling its promise of ending breast cancer forever. Last year, a record 1,300 teams signed up, accounting for over half of National Race for the Cure participants. Rep. Wittman is challenging other offices to join him in forming congressional teams, with the goal of topping the 32 Hill teams that participated last year. "This is as nonpartisan as a congressional challenge gets. Let's do our part for a cure to breast cancer, and have some fun with our friends, family and colleagues in the process. Without our help, 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will continue to be diagnosed with breast cancer. In Jo Ann's memory, I'm asking my colleagues to join Team Wittman on June 7th," Wittman said.
