Wittman Statement on the President's Budget Request

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Rob Wittman (R-VA-1) released the following statement today on the president's budget request for fiscal year 2016:

“While I am pleased that the president is acknowledging the importance of addressing sequestration and restoring readiness cuts, I remain concerned about his apparent commitment to raising taxes and expanding spending programs without getting our nation on a path to a balanced budget. I believe a balanced budget is critical, and I also believe we must pass comprehensive tax reform legislation in order to create a fair, balanced code that encourages savings, investment, and economic growth.

“A number of items in this proposal, including efforts to fund a 12th San Antonio Class ship (LPD-28) and fully fund the refueling of the George Washington (CVN-73), are initiatives I have supported in the past, and I will continue to champion them as the budget process unfolds this spring. At the same time, however, the president’s proposal also includes policies that I have long opposed, such as BRAC. Virginians can be assured that I will fight to prevent this short-sighted, costly endeavor from being included in the budget.

“Above all, Congress and the president must work together to prevent the sequester from taking effect later this year and restore cuts to our national defense. Our defense readiness is at stake, and our military leaders have made clear that these budget reductions would be devastating for our force. Our men and women in uniform deserve a thoughtful debate on this issue so that we can responsibly ensure they are properly resourced, equipped, and trained to complete their missions successfully and return home to their families.”

Congressman Rob Wittman represents the 1st District of Virginia. He serves on the House Natural Resources Committee and the House Armed Services Committee, where he is Chairman of the Readiness Subcommittee.
