Wittman Receives Sustainable Fisheries Award

The Virginia Watermen’s Association awarded Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-1) with their Sustainable Fisheries Award at an event last night in Washington, D.C., for his efforts over the years to support sustainable fisheries. This award is presented by fishermen and other fishery stakeholders to Members of Congress for their consistent and outspoken support for policies to improve the management and sustainability of fisheries throughout the United States.

“Congressman Rob Wittman is one of the strongest supporters of fishermen and sustainable fisheries in Congress,” said Ken Smith, president of the Virginia Waterman’s Association. “He understands our industry, fisheries management, and the need for better science and data to improve and sustain fisheries.  Because of his consistent support, Virginia Watermen and our fishermen colleagues across the country are pleased to present Congressman Wittman with the Sustainable Fisheries Champion award.”

Wittman serves on the House Natural Resources Committee and the Subcommittee on Fisheries, Wildlife, Oceans and Insular Affairs and is an avid angler and sportsman.

“Sustaining our natural resources through the use of sound science and data is a passion of mine, and I am humbled to receive this award,” Wittman said. “The Virginia seafood industry is one of the oldest industries in the United States; it is a way of life and an economic driver for the Commonwealth.”

Wittman’s recent work includes the introduction of H.R. 3063, the Healthy Fisheries through Better Science Act. This legislation would improve the nation’s fisheries by requiring timely stock assessments, and better involve fisherman and non-federal partners to improve fisheries science.

Congressman Rob Wittman represents the First District of Virginia. He serves on the House Natural Resources Committee and the House Armed Services Committee where he is the Chairman of the Readiness Subcommittee.
