Wittman Response to the State of the Union
Washington, D.C.,
January 28, 2014
Representative Rob Wittman (VA-1) released the following statement in reaction to the President’s 2014 State of the Union address: “While the President mentioned critical areas of focus and an important word, “action,” I am disappointed in the lack of support for simple policies to help create an environment for economic growth. Sometimes doing the wrong thing often produces worse results than no action at all. We have already see negative effects of government regulations on jobs and health insurance as a result of Obamacare. Adding more government regulation and Washington intervention is not the answer. It is critical that the policies coming out of Washington encourage an environment of job growth and economic growth in our communities. I am committed to supporting policies that ensure our businesses can innovate and expand without unnecessary regulations from the federal government, including offshore energy exploration in Virginia. While the President talked about energy policy, his Administration continues to block the energy measure that would create jobs in Virginia and bring in additional revenue to the Commonwealth. “Tonight, I would have liked to hear more from the President about the need to improve this nation’s military readiness. The world is not getting safer, and we must invest in our defense and national security. As the Chairman of the House Armed Services Readiness Subcommittee, I will continue to press the Administration and the Pentagon on how our military will be prepared to fight in the 21st century when decisions are being made to cut essential equipment and training dollars for our troops. I will also press the importance of supporting our military veterans and families, and not look to balance the budget on their backs. “Lastly, our Founding Fathers clearly and soundly created three equal branches of government, and I believe strongly that the President should not act unilaterally with his “pen and a phone” plan, but rather continue to work with the Congress to govern responsibly and be accountable to those who have entrusted us as their elected representatives. We have seen numerous instances recently of a lack of accountability in Washington: Obamacare, Benghazi, scandals at the GSA and IRS, and others. The American people deserve better from their government. “Our nation has great days ahead, and I believe we must continue upon the legacy built by our Founding Fathers and the great men and women who have gone before us.” Congressman Rob Wittman represents the First District of Virginia. He serves on the House Natural Resources Committee and the House Armed Services Committee where he is the Chairman of the Readiness Subcommittee. |
