February 13, 2008: Wittman to Co-Sponsor Resolution Supporting United States Marine Corps
Washington, D.C.,
February 13, 2008
(Washington D.C.) - Congressman Rob Wittman (R-VA) announced today that he will co-sponsor House Resolution 958, reaffirming his commitment to the United States Marine Corps. The resolution was introduced by Congressman John Kline (R-MN) in response to aggressive actions taken by the Berkeley California City Council towards the Marine Corps recruiting office in that city. "I am honored to have the opportunity to offer my full and unflinching support to the courageous men and women who serve in the United States Marine Corps. Since 1775 the United States Marine Corps have served admirably in defense of our freedom, and their sacrifice for our nation should never be treated as a political ploy," said Wittman. Following the introduction of House Resolution 958 and after intense pressure from many Members of Congress, the Berkeley City Council relented and issued a letter stating their support for our troops. "It is unfortunate that elected officials would use our troops as a means to express their personal political views. I am very pleased that my fellow legislators and I were able to unite in our efforts to prevent our troops from being used as political props. As a result, the Berkeley City Council has recognized the resounding support the American people have for our men and women serving in uniform and have chosen to rescind their previous decision and offer their full support to the United States Marine Corps."
