Wittman Votes to Support Local Law Enforcement and Mental Health Resources

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-01), voted in support of H.R. 6448 – the Invest to Protect Act of 2022. Following his vote, Congressman Wittman stated:

“Our law enforcement officers represent selfless and exceptional dedication to serving their communities and neighbors. We in Congress must work to ensure they have proper and sufficient tools, resources, and training to do their jobs to the best of their ability. Our nation is facing an ongoing crime crisis, and we must be thoughtful about the need to recruit and train brave men and women who are willing to risk their safety in order to keep our communities safe. America is stronger because of our brave men and women in law enforcement, and I will always work to ensure they have the tools they need to be successful.”

H.R. 6448 – the Invest to Protect Act of 2022, creates a new grant program at the Department of Justice focused on improving the recruitment and retention of local law enforcement and providing training and access to mental health resources. Grants may be used to fund several different “eligible activities” including de-escalation training, law enforcement officer signing and retention bonuses, training for handling situations involving domestic violence and responding to calls for service involving persons with substance use disorders, and improved access to mental health care services for law enforcement officers.
