Wittman: “Reentering the JCPOA would be misguided and unwise”

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-01) released the following statement in response to restarting indirect talks between the United States and Iran on the “Iran Nuclear Deal:”

“Any attempts by the Biden Administration to reenter the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known in its colloquial form as the “Iran Nuclear Deal,” would be misguided and unwise. We have been down this road, and under the previous JCPOA, Iran continually violated the spirit of the last deal and negotiations. Even now, Iran continues to prevent international inspectors from accessing certain sites, persists in harassing inspectors with invasive security searches, and failing to explain the detected presence of uranium at multiple locations. And, throughout all this, Iran has continued its attempts to destabilize the region in hopes of its regime benefiting from the chaos.

After the historic Abraham Accords and the successful maximum pressure campaign, Iran is cornered and weak. Simply put, now is not the time to deviate from the maximum pressure campaign that has forced Iran to slash its military budget and reduce its foreign currency reserve by 95%. Now is not the time to give Iran the fiscal and conventional means to increase support to terrorist groups to advance its malign agenda in the region. Now is not the time to be giving in to demands—I would strongly urge this administration to continue doing what has been working rather than returning to what has failed.”
