Today, Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-01) issued the following statement in response to President Biden’s announcement of the American Families Plan:
“If we know one thing about how the Biden Administration operates, we know they latch onto a popular word, words such as “rescue” or “infrastructure,” and then use that word to push through unrelated spending. With only 9% of the American Rescue Plan having gone to actual COVID-19 relief and only 6% of President Biden’s proposed infrastructure package going to roads and bridges, one has to wonder how little of the American Families Plan will really go to American families.
“In each case, the Biden Administration’s answers always seem to be massive spending bills expanding the government’s role in public life. But if we truly care about our kids, we must not mortgage their economic future to avoid hard choices today. In doing so, President Biden creates more problems than he solves. Instead of helping American families, he risks crushing them under a mountain of federal debt. Moreover, economists across the political spectrum have warned President Biden about the very real threat the inflation caused by his reckless spending poses to our economic recovery.
“We cannot continue spending at our current pace. We must rein in wasteful spending, think carefully about our future priorities, and prevent future tax hikes before we stunt the United States’ economic recovery just as we turn the corner on the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, we must push for an agenda that is pro-worker, pro-family, pro-growth, and, most of all, pro-American. That includes focusing on preparing our students for the demands of our current society and our future workforce and providing currently unemployed Americans with an outlet to reintegrate into the workforce. I remain committed to ensuring our students have access to quality education, opportunities to succeed, and more options for saving towards those goals.”
Congressman Rob Wittman represents the 1st District of Virginia. He serves on the House Natural Resources Committee and the House Armed Services Committee, where he serves as the Vice Ranking Member of the full Committee and Ranking Member of the Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee.
