Wittman statement on Continuing Resolution passed in House
Washington,
September 22, 2020
WASHINGTON – Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-01) today issued the following statement after voting against H.R. 8337 – Continuing Appropriations Act, a continuing resolution through December 11, 2020: “It is imperative that we get our nation’s fiscal house in order and work to address our nation’s debt and deficit. Yet again, we see that House leadership would rather kick the can down the road than buckle down and get the job done for the American people. The people we serve deserve better than moving goalposts and looming fiscal cliffs. “Returning to regular order —moving spending bills through the committee process where we read, debate, and vote on them — will go a long way towards bringing transparency back to the budget and appropriations process. Continuing resolutions hurt our nation’s economy and greatly weaken our chances to effectively recover from the impacts of COVID-19. “Now more than ever Congress should be focused on getting the job done for Americans, but instead, Speaker Pelosi and House Leadership would rather put a Band-Aid on a broken leg. I have been working to hold Members of Congress accountable for years, and I continue to call on them to do the right thing, stay in Washington, and get the job done.” Congressman Wittman is the leading voice for increasing Congressional accountability. For years, Congressman Wittman has introduced the No Budget No Pay Act that says if Congress doesn’t pass a budget on time Members don’t get a paycheck, the Stay on Schedule Resolution that says if Congress doesn’t pass all appropriations bills by July 31, the House should stay in session and continue its work instead of adjourning for August recess, and the Inaction Has Consequences Act that says if Members of Congress do not complete appropriations bills by the end of the fiscal year, they will not receive a paycheck. He believes that we must work for a permanent solution that will provide a path to fiscal certainty for our federal agencies. Congressman Rob Wittman represents the 1st District of Virginia. He serves on the House Natural Resources Committee and the House Armed Services Committee, where he serves as the ranking member of the Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee. |
