January 19, 2011: Wittman to Lead Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee, Continue Focus with Seapower Seat
Washington, D.C.,
January 20, 2011
Washington, DC – Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-1) today officially accepted positions to serve on the House Armed Services Committee, as Chairman Howard P. “Buck” McKeon (R-Calif.), today announced official subcommittee assignments, tapping Wittman to serve on the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations and the Subcommittee on Seapower and Projection Forces. As planned, Wittman will assume Chairmanship duties for the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee. “These subcommittees certainly align with priorities here in the First District, and I’m proud to once again serve on both Oversight and Seapower,” Wittman said. “As our nation’s budget remains tight, it is critical that we continue to focus our defense policies and budgets by the strategic needs of this nation. I look forward to working with Chairman McKeon and Ranking Member Smith in addressing the challenges before us.” About the First District The First Congressional District of Virginia is home to Marine Corps Base Quantico, Naval Support Facility Dahlgren, Fort A.P. Hill, US Coast Guard Training Facility Yorktown and Naval Weapons Station Yorktown. Langley Air Force Base and Fort Eustis also are adjacent to the border of the First District.
About the Subcommittees
The Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee has oversight over Navy acquisition programs, Naval Reserve equipment, and Marine Corps amphibious assault vehicle programs (except strategic weapons, space, special operations, science and technology programs, and information technology programs), deep strike bombers and related systems, lift programs, and seaborne unmanned aerial systems. In addition, the subcommittee will be responsible for Maritime programs under the jurisdiction of the Committee.
The Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee conducts studies and investigations across the jurisdiction of the House Armed Services Committee, including inquiries into allegations of waste, fraud, abuse, and wrongdoing and inefficiencies within the Department of Defense. Members and staff conduct comprehensive oversight studies of major programs and issues and produce reports for the Committee and DOD providing recommendations and improvements of these programs. |
