January 6, 2011: Congressman Wittman Votes to Reduce Spending in Congress, on Congress

Washington, DC – In one of the first votes of the 112th Congress, Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-01) today voted to support legislation cutting operational costs in Congress by five percent. The resolution would immediately save taxpayers $35 million, proposing to cut the operating budgets of House committees, leadership offices, and individual lawmakers’ offices by five percent.

“This legislation today trims the budgets here in Congress by $35 million, a first step in the right direction," Wittman said. "With this new beginning here in Washington, DC, the folks of America's First District expect change. Today, this vote has set the tone for fiscal responsibility by first looking inward for savings of taxpayer dollars. However, there's much more work to be done to trim deficits. Government has been spending out of control for far too long, and we must now roll up our sleeves and return to levels of more responsible, accountable spending. We were elected to make tough decisions.  There is no doubt that prioritizing spending will be challenging, but we simply must. America has become a strong nation because of leaders who do what is right, not what is easy."

Since his election to Congress, Wittman has consistently supported cuts to the salaries of Members of Congress. He also supports a measure to amend the Constitution to require that Congress balance the budget each year.

Congressman Rob Wittman represents the First District of Virginia. He was elected to his second full term in November 2010 and serves on the Natural Resources Committee and the Armed Services Committee
