December 21, 2010: House Armed Services Committee Names Wittman Subcommittee Chairman

Washington, DC – The incoming Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, U.S. Rep. Howard P. “Buck” McKeon (R-Calif.), today tapped Representative Rob Wittman (VA-1) to serve as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations. Wittman currently serves as the Ranking Member and will assume Chairmanship duties at the start of the 112th Congress in January 2011.

“The opportunity to lead a subcommittee comes with great responsibility, and I humbly accept that responsibility,” Wittman said. “Our nation’s defense policy and related spending levels have come under increased scrutiny. The men and women of our Armed Forces continue to serve across the world, fighting those who wish to do harm in this country. The stakes are high and this is a critical time in the defense of our nation. The defense policies coming from Congress must be driven by thoughtful, strategic analysis and decision-making. I look forward to addressing the challenges before us and working with the new Chairman and Ranking Member to support our troops and the security of this nation.”

As is the normal practice for the committee, the subcommittee structure and jurisdictions will be ratified as part of the committee rules during a full House Armed Services Committee organizational meeting in January.

Incoming Chairman McKeon commented, “I’m pleased to announce the appointment of Rob Wittman as the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee Chairman. Rob is a thoughtful legislator who understands the national security challenges facing our nation. His eye for detail and tireless work ethic will serve the committee and his country well.”

The First Congressional District of Virginia is home to Marine Corps Base Quantico, Naval Support Facility Dahlgren, Fort A.P. Hill, Langley Air Force Base, Fort Eustis, US Coast Guard Training Facility Yorktown and Naval Weapons Station Yorktown.

Congressman Rob Wittman represents the First District of Virginia. He serves on the Natural Resources Committee and the Armed Services Committee where he is the Ranking Member of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee.
