May 11, 2010: New Government Report Shows Carrier Decision Lacked Analysis

Washington, D.C. – Today, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a report that demonstrates the Navy’s lack of analysis in its Mayport homeporting recommendation.  The report is the result of an amendment Wittman offered last year to the 2010 National Defense Authorization Act.

“How can we ask the American taxpayers to fund a redundant homeport for nuclear carriers on the East Coast when this report clearly shows that the Navy needs to improve its processes for assessing risk and strategic placement of their carriers,” Wittman said.  “As I have said throughout this process, the Navy has yet to demonstrate to Congress a clear assessment of this decision for moving a carrier.”

Congressman Rob Wittman represents the First District of Virginia. He was elected to his first full term in November 2008 and serves on the Natural Resources Committee and the Armed Services Committee where he is the Ranking Member of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee.
