WASHINGTON – Congressmen Wittman (VA-1), Griffith (VA-9), Riggleman (VA-5), and Cline (VA-6) released the following statement calling on Gov. Northam to denounce Delegate Kathy Tran’s bill, H.B. 2491, the Repeal Act, and asking him to answer the question: Are you supportive of Delegate Tran’s bill that seeks to roll back restrictions on late-term abortions in Virginia?:
“Yesterday on WTOP’s “Ask the Governor” program, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam commented on H.B. 2491, The Repeal Act. The governor’s comments were, at best, confusing and at worst an endorsement. When asked if he supported the bill, Gov. Northam’s answer was vague and nonspecific.
“We ask Governor Northam to clarify his position and answer this question: Are you supportive of Delegate Tran’s bill or against it? If against, it is critical that you voice your opposition and work with the General Assembly on provisions that protect life. We will be standing with the Members of the General Assembly who stand against the Repeal Act.
“We, the Virginia Republican Congressional Delegation, are united in our opposition to this bill. We reject this as a blatant attack on human life that allows easy abortions up until the point of birth. This assault on the most vulnerable among us is both heartbreaking and abhorrent. We firmly denounce this legislation and ask our colleagues in the General Assembly to do the same. This is not who we are as a Commonwealth.”
Congressman Rob Wittman represents the 1st District of Virginia. He serves on the House Natural Resources Committee and the House Armed Services Committee, where he serves as the ranking member of the Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee.
