Wittman Votes to Ensure Federal Employees Receive Back Pay

WASHINGTON – Congressman Wittman released this statement after supporting S. 24, the Government Employee Fair Treatment Act. This legislation is the comparable, Senate version of Rep. Don Beyer (VA-8-D) and Rep. Wittman’s Federal Employee Retroactive Pay Fairness Act, which would ensure furloughed federal employees to receive back pay.

“Federal employees should not suffer for Congress’ inaction and deserve the certainty of proper funding to do their jobs. I have been urging the Speaker for days to do this, and I am thrilled that the she finally brought this bill to the floor. This legislation is now headed to President Trump’s desk, and I urge him to sign it immediately. We cannot continue to hold our federal employees hostage.

“While the bill passed today provides this much-needed certainty to furloughed workers, we still have to end this shutdown and provide the needed resources to secure our border. In the meantime, Speaker Pelosi needs to keep the House in town until we find a realistic solution that will gain the support of both the Senate and the president.”

Rep. Don Beyer and Rep. Rob Wittman have consistently introduced the Federal Employee Retroactive Pay Fairness Act. Together, the two Virginia Congressmen represent nearly 120,000 federal employees. The Beyer-Wittman legislation guarantees that no federal employees will lose pay. Similar legislation was passed to pay civil servants in the wake of the government shutdown in early 2018 as well.

Congressman Rob Wittman represents the 1st District of Virginia. He serves on the House Natural Resources Committee and the House Armed Services Committee.
