February 4, 2010: Congressman Wittman Statement on Debt Limit Increase
Washington, D.C.,
February 4, 2010
Washington D.C. - Today, Congressman Rob Wittman released the following statement after the House of Representatives voted 233-187, without any Republican support, to increase the nation's debt limit by $1.9 trillion to a total limit of $14.294 trillion:
"Today, Congress approved the largest one-time increase of our nation's debt limit in the history of the republic. For the second time in as many months, members of the majority have sought to kick the can down the road and saddle every man, woman, and child in this nation with an additional $6,000 in debt. American's are already obligated with the responsibility of paying $40,000 each towards our national tab. The sad part of all this is that it doesn't have to be this way. Instead of passing budgets that continue to dig us into a deeper and deeper hole, we can balance our budget today, cut our spending, and go line by line like the President said he would, and make the same hard decisions that families across America have been making about what we need and what we want. Unfortunately, my colleagues want more than they need and we continue to see our debt skyrocket, while Americans get stuck with the bill." Congressman Rob Wittman represents the First District of Virginia. He was elected to his first full term in November 2008 and serves on the Natural Resources Committee and the Armed Services Committee where he is the Ranking Member of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee. |
