August 3, 2009: Congressman Wittman Supports Telework Day
Washington, D.C.,
August 3, 2009
WASHINGTON, DC - Today Congressman Rob Wittman marked Telework Day as a time to advocate for increased use of telework centers in the First District and across the National Capitol Region which now includes 14 such facilities sponsored by the General Services Administration.
"Telework centers are leading the way for expanding the Government's base of operations and removing cars from our already overflowing highways. I'm proud to continue to highlight the importance of these locations," said Wittman. "Existing law requires each federal agency to establish a policy under which eligible employees of the agency may participate in telecommuting to the maximum extent possible without diminished employee performance. We want to ensure that federal employees who are eligible to telework have access to facilities that can accommodate them. Furthermore, in the event of an emergency these locations will be essential to the continuity of our daily operations," added Wittman. In June, Wittman supported the House version of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2010 which authorizes the establishment of two secure telework centers on a trial basis to allow employees who handle classified materials to join the growing number of workers using similar facilities. In 2007 just under 8% of federal workers in the U.S. teleworked, a total of 94,643 employees. Congressman Rob Wittman represents the First District of Virginia. He was elected to his first full term in November 2008 and serves on the Natural Resources Committee and the Armed Services Committee where he is the Ranking Member of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee. |
