Last week, President Trump formally declared the opioid epidemic a public health emergency.

Back in March, the President signed an executive order establishing the Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis; this announcement follows the Commission’s guidance that the President take such action. As this epidemic sweeps across the country, Virginia has not been immune. We’ve lost thousands of friends and loved ones across our state. Too many families are suffering from the fallout of addiction, and we must continue studying this crisis and working to end it.

By declaring a public health emergency, the federal government will be able to grant states more flexibility in their use of federal funds, waive certain regulations, and expand their use of telemedical treatment. Moreover, the public health emergency designation needs to be renewed every 90 days until the emergency has been resolved.
