June 12, 2009: Congressman Wittman Fights for Norfolk Carrier
Washington, D.C.,
June 12, 2009
WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Rob Wittman today sponsored two amendments to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) aimed at stopping the transfer of an aircraft carrier from Norfolk to Mayport, Florida. Both Amendments were offered during the Readiness Subcommittee mark up of the NDAA this afternoon.
"These efforts are directly aimed at forcing the Navy to determine whether or not Mayport is actually appropriate for a carrier before spending money on it. Right now, we're dealing with a ‘Fire, Ready, Aim' type scenario. We need to inject some reason into the deliberations and these amendments would do just that," said Wittman. One amendment would reallocate $46.3 million originally intended to dredge Mayport harbor to cover current shortfalls in Navy and Marine reserve military construction accounts. Another amendment requires the Government Accountability Office to generate a report explaining the Department of Defense's decision making process in military basing decisions. Wittman partnered with Reps. Forbes and Nye in offering the amendments. Congressman Rob Wittman represents the First District of Virginia. He was elected to his first full term in November 2008 and serves on the Natural Resources Committee and the Armed Services Committee where he is the Ranking Member of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee. |
