Critical Race Theory has recently made headlines due to debates throughout the nation on whether it should be implemented as part of the K-12 curriculum. Critical Race Theory teaches that racism is not just demonstrated by individual people with prejudices, but rather that it is a systemic issue permeating American society as a whole.
Critical Race Theory proponents claim that America is irreparably racist, and that we should view every social interaction and person in terms of race. It teaches that racial oppression exists everywhere, and individuals are inherently oppressors or oppressed based solely on the color of their skin.
However, I strongly disagree with proponents’ claims that America is irreparably racist and that we should view every social interaction and person based on the color of their skin. In my opinion, Critical Race Theory promotes counter-productive and divisive concepts that violate civil rights by treating people differently according to race. I believe schools can address race and racism both in history and in the present, but it should be done in a way that doesn't cause further division.
