If there's one issue that impacts each of us on a daily basis, it's the price of gas. With the national average of a gallon of gas passing four dollars this week, filling up at the pump is becoming an incredibly expensive proposition.

In fact, in my tele-town hall meeting on Wednesday, energy was the number one issue on the minds of constituents by an overwhelming margin.

(Washington, DC) - Congressman Rob Wittman announced the award of a $7.32 Million grant to fund expansion of the B Terminal at Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport.

The funds, awarded by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), will pay for six additional gates and help accommodate for forecasted growth at the airport.

(Washington, D.C.) - Congressman Rob Wittman introduced legislation today that will restore common sense fiscal discipline to Congress' management of the Highway Trust Fund.

The Responsible Highway Investment Act will reinstate the requirement for Highway Trust Fund balances to be placed in interest bearing accounts.

"Right now, we might as well be keeping this money under our mattresses or burying it in the back yard. It's doing nothing for us, and the Highway Trust Fund is suffering because of it," said Wittman.

This week I was pleased to support the final passage of the Defense Authorization Bill for fiscal year 2009. I want to share with you some important provisions of the bill.

H.R. 5658, the Duncan Hunter National Defense Authorization Act of 2008, authorizes $531.4 billion in budget authority for the Department of Defense (DoD) and the national security programs of the Department of Energy (DoE). The bill also authorizes $70 billion to support ongoing military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan during fiscal year 2009. H.R.

(Washington, D.C.) - Congressman Robert J. Wittman (VA-01) today announced that the Department of Labor recently issued new rules and regulations to reform the current process that applies to temporary worker visas.

The rules will improve the current system and make it easier for business to hire the employees they need.  The action comes as businesses across the county are struggling to find enough workers.

(Washington, D.C.) - Congressman Robert J. Wittman (VA-01) today announced that the House of Representatives passed H.R. 5658, the Duncan Hunter National Defense Authorization Act of 2008 by a vote of 384 to 23.

 

H.R. 5658 authorizes $531.4 billion for the Department of Defense (DoD) and the national security programs of the Department of Energy (DoE).  It also includes $70 billion to support ongoing military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan during fiscal year 2009.

Last week I was pleased to offer amendments to the FY2009 Defense Authorization Bill in the House Armed Services Committee, which were successfully adopted.

 

It was a long day (the Committee meeting lasted from 9am until 2am the next morning!), and I really enjoyed the debate and dealing with all of the different issues at hand.  I was especially pleased to successfully amend the bill with the following provisions:

Submarines have been a central component of our naval forces for over a century. Since World War II, the United States has employed a number of different submarines to conduct military operations around the globe.

During the Cold War the submarine emerged as one of our nation's best tools for preventing the threat of World War III and today the submarine helps our Navy conduct numerous operations in the War on Terror.
