WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Rob Wittman today opposed passage of H.R. 2346, The Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2009. Historically intended as a vehicle to fund mission critical combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, the once popular legislation was loaded up in recent weeks with unrelated and controversial deficit spending initiatives. It passed the House by a vote of 226 to 202.

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Rob Wittman today sponsored two amendments to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) aimed at stopping the transfer of an aircraft carrier from Norfolk to Mayport, Florida. Both Amendments were offered during the Readiness Subcommittee mark up of the NDAA this afternoon.

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Rob Wittman, along with Republicans on the House Armed Services Committee and the House Veterans Affairs Committee, today called on Budget Committee Chairman John Spratt (D-SC) to utilize the "reserve funds" he imbedded in the House Budget Resolution to pay for key benefits promised to America's military personnel and their families, military retirees and veterans.

This past week, while participating in a conference call with General Motors management and members of the President's Automotive Task Force, I received the troubling news that General Motors plans to close its Powertrain plant in Spotsylvania County by December 2010. GM's decision to end their thirty year relationship with the area will have a tremendous impact on both the employees who worked there and the surrounding community. WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Rob Wittman announced the award of a $1.45 million grant from the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration to fund the Virginia Sea Grant College Program at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science for FY2009. The grant will be used to carry out an extensive portfolio of research, outreach and education on issues that affect Virginia and the Mid Atlantic.

WASHINGTON, DC -Congressman Rob Wittman voted today in support of H.R. 1385, the Thomasina E. Jordan Indian Tribes of Virginia Federal Recognition Act of 2009. The bill, which passed the house by a voice vote, extends federal recognition to the Chickahominy Indian Tribe, the Chickahominy Indian Tribe-Eastern Division, the Upper Mattaponi Tribe, the Rappahannock Tribe, Inc., the Monacan Indian Nation, and the Nansemond Indian Tribe, which have sought federal recognition through legislation for years.

This week in Washington, Congress has taken action to reign in credit card companies from performing unscrupulous business practices. Unfortunately, I've heard from many constituents who have received a letter from their credit card company notifying them that their card's limit has been reduced or their interest rate has been raised without notification.
