July 27, 2009: Congressman Wittman Appointed to Naval Academy Board of Visitors

Monday, July 27, 2009
Washington, D.C. - Congressman Rob Wittman today was appointed to serve on the United States Naval Academy Board of Visitors.  His appointment is effective August 1, 2009.

"It is an honor to be chosen to serve on the Naval Academy Board of Visitors and I look forward to working with the other Board Members to help ensure that our Midshipmen receive the finest education and training available.  Furthermore, I believe that this appointment will provide valuable insight into the military foundations of the many Naval Academy graduates in the First District," said Wittman.

The Board of Visitors consists of six members appointed by the President, three appointed by the Vice President, four appointed by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, one designated by the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) and one designated by the House Armed Services Committee (HASC). Wittman will serve as the HASC designee.

The Board's duties are to inquire into the state of morale and discipline, the curriculum, instruction, physical equipment, fiscal affairs, academic methods, and other matters relating to the academy which the board decides to consider.  The Board's findings and recommendations are presented to the President in an annual report.

The First District of Virginia has a significant concentration of Naval Academy alumni, with many active Navy and Marine Corps officers serving in the Hampton Roads and Quantico areas.

Congressman Rob Wittman represents the First District of Virginia. He was elected to his first full term in November 2008 and serves on the Natural Resources Committee and the Armed Services Committee, where he is the Ranking Member of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee.
