For the second year in a row, Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-1) today voted against a measure allowing the House to adjourn for the month of August. Wittman opposed the measure citing unfinished business and critical issues that Members of Congress should debate and address rather than traveling back to their Congressional districts.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-1), Chairman of the House Armed Services Readiness Subcommittee, praised passage of the Department of Defense (DoD) Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2014. The annual appropriations legislation, H.R. 2397, includes $512 billion in non-war funding, a decrease of $5.1 billion below the fiscal year 2013 enacted level and approximately $28.1 billion above the current level caused by automatic sequestration spending cuts.

Too many desks sat idle this week, as furloughs began for many federal civilian employees in the Department of Defense (DOD) due to the indiscriminate budget cuts known as sequestration. These DOD workers are truly dedicated patriots who are tasked by Congress with their duties. Their efforts to support our war fighters are vital to the mission of our overall national security, and these cuts continue to undermine the strength of our military's readiness.
