That’s why I voted in favor of a farm bill that, while not perfect, proposed to reduce waste and make government more accountable, while also including important provisions to improve rural broadband access and improvements in the utilization of resources dedicated to restore the Chesapeake Bay.

Members of Virginia's Congressional Delegation today sent a letter to U.S. Department of Labor Acting Secretary Seth D. Harris expressing unified support for a proposal to obtain a federal grant to support the Hire Vets Virginia initiative. All thirteen members of the Virginia Congressional Delegation signed the letter expressing interest in the proposal submitted for the National Emergency Grant on behalf of the Commonwealth.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-1) today voted in favor of legislation to unlock Virginia's offshore energy resources and create jobs in the Commonwealth. The House passed H.R. 2231, the Offshore Energy and Jobs Act, which would require the Secretary of Interior to conduct a Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) lease sale in Virginia, as well as South Carolina and Southern California. It would also establish revenue-sharing with states, an important component that will return millions of dollars to the Commonwealth.

Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-1) had the opportunity today to congratulate the First Congressional District of Virginia's winner of the 2013 Congressional Art Competition. Emily Krupp of Woodbridge, Virginia, submitted the winning artwork, entitled Pixel Collision. Emily will be a junior at C.D. Hylton High School in the fall.

Weekly Updates

Last week we saw widespread support for our men and women in uniform as the full House of Representatives passed the Fiscal Year 2014 National Defense Authorization Act, which had been approved by the House Armed Services Committee the previous week. I was pleased to see a bipartisan show of commitment, both in committee and in the full House, to our all-volunteer force and to ensuring that our national defense infrastructure remains capable of protecting our freedoms.

As the NDAA moves to the full House for consideration, it is critical that our elected leaders not ignore an issue that is at the heart of any discussion on the future of our military, namely, the irresponsible, across-the-board budget cuts that went into effect in April, known as the sequester. It is imperative that these cuts be addressed in a way that allows our military to continue to be the strongest fighting force on the planet.

WASHINGTON, DC – Virginia's First District Representative and House Armed Services Readiness Subcommittee Chairman Rob Wittman accepted the U.S. Navy's Distinguished Public Service Award today, the highest recognition the Navy grants to a civilian. The award is presented for an individual's contributions and accomplishments that have had Navy-wide impact or beyond. Wittman accepted the award from U.S. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus in his Washington, D.C. office.
