Washington, D.C. - "I am cautiously optimistic to hear that the blue crab population in the Chesapeake Bay is coming back. We need to ensure the health of the blue crab population, while at the same time keeping in mind the effects the harvest restrictions have on our watermen," Wittman stated.

This past week of the Congressional District Work Period has given me a lot of great opportunities to hear thoughts from folks at home, and to catch up with those of you who just can't make it to Washington. Specifically, I've met with my Education Advisory Council, several Rotary Clubs, as well as small businesses around the First District.

First, as a spouse of a public school teacher, education is extremely important to me.

Washington, D.C. - Today, Congressman Rob Wittman spoke with Deputy Secretary of Defense William Lynn, the Department of Defense's (DoD) second in command. Lynn informed Wittman that the DOD has decided to postpone the movement of a nuclear aircraft carrier from Norfolk, VA to Mayport, FL until the completion of the 2010 Quadrennial Defense Review.

Although I have spent the first week of the Congressional District Work Period back in the First District, I have continued to monitor developments in Washington and have several things to report to you all back at home. First, the Secretary of Defense issued his budget recommendations for the coming fiscal year. Then, I joined other Virginia Congressmen and others from around the country in a bipartisan letter to the President continuing to urge against the move of a nuclear aircraft carrier from Norfolk, VA to Mayport, FL.

This week has seen some significant developments on the path to approving a budget for the fiscal year 2010 set to begin in October of this year. I am happy to report that in the course of the budget debate I supported an alternative to the proposed majority plan which would reign in spending, balance the budget, and place America on a path to fiscal responsibility.

WASHINGTON, DC - Today Congressman Rob Wittman joined 136 other House members to vote in favor of an alternative federal budget resolution to the proposed majority plan which would reign in spending, balance the budget, and place America on a path to fiscal responsibility.

"In considering this resolution I asked myself, 'does the family that lost their source of income or saw their pay cut this year get to spend more than they have?', clearly the answer is 'no' and our government should share their restraint when it comes to spending," said Wittman.

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congressman Rob Wittman congratulated Caroline County upon being named one of twenty-one finalists from around the country to compete for the National Civic League's All-American City Award. Caroline began competing for the award this past fall by starting three community projects involving grassroots civic engagement and cooperation between public, private and nonprofit sectors that best illustrate a proven capacity for community-based problem solving. Those projects are the Dawn Rehabilitation Project, the Caroline Library and the Caroline Dental Program.
