Although gas prices have stayed relatively stable this summer and we were spared from $4 a gallon prices, the threat of increased prices still looms on the horizon. In August of 2008 I joined citizens and several of my fellow legislators in Congress to call for an all of the above energy program to ensure that America is placed on the track for energy independence. While fossil fuels are not a reliable long-term energy source, we must develop our resources at home as a bridge to future energy sources, including nuclear, wind and solar power.

WASHINGTON, DC - Next Saturday, Congressman Rob Wittman will host a "Paying for College Workshop for area high school students and parents. The event seeks to answer financial aid questions as families and higher learning institutions both face tighter budgets. Wittman will be joined by guest speakers from the Educational Credit Management Corporation. The workshop will cover choosing the right college, the financial aid process, obtaining Federal and state grants, loans and navigating scholarship searches and avoiding scams.

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congressman Rob Wittman announced the award of two grants to fund the rehabilitation of the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport. The grants in the amounts of $780,000 and $1.43 million will enhance the safety of the runway and upgrade it to meet Federal Aviation Administration design standards.

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congressman Rob Wittman announced the award of a grant of $652,080 to the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation for construction of two bus facilities for Bay Transit. Specifically, the project will consolidate and streamline administrative, maintenance, dispatching and training functions in Warsaw, VA. Currently, the organization's facilities are scattered throughout the region in Warsaw and the Middle Peninsula.

The termination of our programs overseas not only affects our relationships with our allies, but also sends the wrong message to the emerging nuclear threats across the globe. I remain committed to ensuring the continuation of our missile defense programs and honoring our obligations overseas", said Wittman.

Weekly Updates
This week Congress returned to Washington after the August District Work Period. Although it's typically a week to set the agenda for the fall session, we've already set to work on legislation that will have some positive effects across the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

As many of you may know, I serve as a member of the Migratory Bird Conservation Commission alongside the Secretaries of the Interior Ken Salazar and Agriculture Tom Vilsack, Senators Thad Cochran (R-MS) and Blanche Lincoln (D-AK) and Congressman John Dingell (D-MI).

WASHINGTON, DC - "Today we mark the eighth anniversary of the attacks of September 11th. My heart goes out, especially to the families of the First District, who lost loved ones on that day in the Pentagon.  On that date, America renewed the commitments which have been met by generations of Americans throughout history and which we continue to fulfill today.

Hampton, VA - Three Hampton Roads members of Congress are teaming up to make the case that Langley Air Force Base would make an ideal home for an additional squadron of F-22s, as well as a future base for F-35s and other emerging Air Force missions.

 

In a letter to Secretary of the Air Force Michael Donley, Congressmen Glenn Nye, Rob Wittman, and Bobby Scott urge the Air Force to take advantage of the "unique capabilities that are currently based at LAFB," and to ensure that "those assets are fully utilized."

WASHINGTON, DC - Today Congressman Rob Wittman joined members from across the aisle to support and pass (311-107) H.R. 965 Chesapeake Bay Gateways and Watertrails Network Continuing Authorization Act. The Act, when approved by the Senate and signed by the President, would permanently authorize this popular Bay program.
