Virginians just finished filing their taxes for 2018. And this is the first year that the benefits of the Republican-led Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) have improved the lives of our citizens. Over the past year, we have experienced more jobs, historic levels of small business optimism, bigger paychecks, increased business investment, and lower tax liability.

Every American understands the pains of budgeting. Each financial decision takes forethought, planning, and tough decisions. I've spent hours huddled around my kitchen table, like many First District families, crunching numbers and working through spreadsheets, and how to put my family in the best place going forward. To me, budgeting is really all about being intentional with where one's money goes in order to achieve a goal – maybe it's paying off a student loan, saving for a down payment on a house, or putting away money for retirement.

Next week, President Trump is expected to release his budget for FY 2020. The President's budget is only the first step in the annual budgeting and appropriations process but acts as a venue for the president to publish his policy objectives. And I'm sure you know, the Administration's FY20 proposal is simply that - a proposal. Any changes in actual funding levels requires Congressional approval.
