Social Security and Medicare are a promise we have made to hardworking Americans—and it is one I fully intend to keep. These programs are earned benefits tied to a lifetime of work, and seniors deserve peace of mind knowing that the benefits they count on will be there when they need them.

Let me be clear: I will not support changes that reduce benefits for current beneficiaries or Americans nearing retirement. At the same time, we cannot ignore the serious long-term financial challenges facing Social Security and Medicare. Failing to act could result in automatic benefit reductions that would be devastating for millions of seniors. Congress must work across the aisle to strengthen these programs, eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse, and ensure their long-term sustainability for future generations.

Protecting seniors also means ensuring access to affordable, high-quality health care. I am working to lower prescription drug costs, reduce unnecessary Medicare red tape, protect access to local health care providers, improve accountability in nursing homes, and help seniors recognize scams and safeguard their personal information.

I also support policies that help Americans save for retirement throughout their working lives. By making it easier for small businesses to offer retirement plans and giving workers greater flexibility to build and manage their savings, we can help more Americans enter retirement with financial security and independence.

Legislative Work

  • Social Security Fairness Act of 2023 (H.R. 82) — Cosponsored this bipartisan legislation, now signed into law, which repealed the Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset that unfairly reduced Social Security benefits for many teachers, police officers, firefighters, and other public servants.
  • Save Our Seniors Act (H.R. 6853) — Original cosponsor of legislation requiring greater transparency about the projected financial condition of the Social Security trust funds so Congress and the American people can better understand the consequences of failing to act.
  • To amend title XVIII of the Social Security Act to increase data transparency for supplemental benefits under Medicare Advantage (H.R. 5243) — Cosponsored legislation to increase transparency in Medicare Advantage supplemental benefits programs, ensuring seniors have access to important data before choosing a plan.
  • SECURE Act of 2019 (H.R. 1994) — Supported this bipartisan law expanding access to workplace retirement plans, helping small businesses offer retirement benefits, and allowing more part-time workers to participate in employer-sponsored plans.
  • SECURE 2.0 Act of 2022 (H.R. 2954) — Supported bipartisan reforms that help workers begin saving earlier, give older Americans greater flexibility over their retirement savings, expand opportunities for late-career workers to catch up, and make it easier for small businesses to offer retirement plans.

Approval of this pipeline is a critical part of an all-of-the-above energy policy, one in which we are exploring all options to ensure energy security in this country. I believe it is possible to both harness our natural resources, as well as preserve them for future generations. I will continue to push for the Keystone XL Pipeline's approval and advocate for energy policies that include responsible development of oil and natural gas as well as alternative forms of energy, such as renewables.
