Border Security

Securing our borders is essential to protecting our communities, defending our national security, and upholding the rule of law. The federal government must provide Border Patrol agents and other law enforcement officers with the personnel, technology, and resources necessary to stop illegal crossings, combat drug cartels and human trafficking, and prevent deadly drugs such as fentanyl from entering our country.

I support policies that restore order to our immigration system, end catch and release, and ensure our nation’s immigration laws are consistently enforced. State, local, and federal law enforcement agencies must also be able to coordinate and share information so dangerous individuals do not fall through the cracks. Immigration enforcement should always be carried out humanely, professionally, and consistent with due process, but individuals who have committed crimes or received final orders of removal should not be allowed to remain in our communities.

We must also restore integrity to our asylum system. Asylum exists to protect people facing genuine persecution, not as a loophole to the immigration process. Reducing fraudulent and meritless claims will help ensure that those who legitimately need humanitarian protection can receive it without facing unnecessary delays.

America has always been a nation of immigrants—and a nation of laws. Legal immigration has strengthened our country for generations, and lawful programs such as H-2B visas remain especially important to helping Virginia’s seafood processors and other seasonal businesses meet workforce demands. I remain committed to securing the border, enforcing our laws, and ensuring our legal immigration programs operate fairly and effectively.

Legislative Work

My legislative work to strengthen border security, protect our communities, and improve the legal immigration system includes:

  • Secure America Act (S. 2, Public Law 119-98) — I voted for this legislation to fund U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement through Fiscal Year 2029, providing resources for additional personnel, modern border technology, screening, detention, transportation, and immigration enforcement operations.
  • Laken Riley Act (S. 5, Public Law 119-1) — I voted for this law requiring the Department of Homeland Security to detain certain noncitizens arrested for or charged with theft-related offenses, assaulting law enforcement, or crimes resulting in death or serious bodily injury. It also gives states a legal avenue to challenge certain federal immigration-enforcement failures that harm their residents.
