My motivation to come to Washington comes from my desire to serve the people of the First District every day. I am dedicated to getting real results to create a better Commonwealth and nation. However, the last few months have been completely dominated by a partisan impeachment process – causing legislating and productivity to come to a screeching halt. This week, the Senate voted to acquit President Trump of both articles of impeachment and I view this as a new beginning.

It all starts with a spark, a twinkle in the eye of a student who has found her passion, solidified his future. She might have just completed a career and technical education (CTE) program in manufacturing technology. He may have figured out a high-level math problem. One thing is sure: These two students are on their way to achieving their dreams even before receiving a high school diploma.

As we start the new year, I am looking forward to what we can accomplish together. Serving the constituents of the First District is my number one priority and I want you to know that I have listened – I have listened to the problems you are having at home and I am working to bring you real results. In 2020, I will be working to expand broadband in rural areas, fix our broken health care system, increase opportunities for students, and fix our dysfunctional budget system in Washington.

We have come to the end of another year, 2019, and what a year it has been! My number one priority is the constituents of the First District and I have been working hard to make sure that my four offices – located in Mechanicsville, Tappahannock, Stafford, and Washington – and I provide the best constituent service as possible. I wanted to take a moment and share with you some statistics from my office since January 1st 2019. If you haven't been receiving my regular email updates, make sure to to stay up to date on what I'm doing in D.C. and in the district.

As your representative in Congress, I am committed to getting real results for the First District. This fall, House Democratic Leadership has been laser focused on one thing: impeachment. As a result, legislative activity has slowed to a crawl. However, I want you to know this week – due to my dedication to reaching across the aisle – we were able to accomplish great things for Virginia.

| Friend– Looking back on the month of November, I had so many great opportunities to visit with our nation's heroes throughout Virginia's First District in celebration of Veterans Day. Our area is home to one of the highest concentration of veterans in the country, and I am honored each chance I get to meet with them and each day I represent them in Congress. |

We have a tradition in my family on Thanksgiving. We all sit down at the table, and before we start eating the beautifully prepared feast, we go around and say what we are thankful for. Well this year, I wanted to do the same thing for work as I do for family - look back through 2019 to think about what I am most thankful for.

Here in the First District we have both rural and suburban areas - each have their own unique challenges. Suburban areas across the country are expanding. Studies show that most all of the population growth in our top 50 metropolitan areas comes directly from growth in the suburbs and it is critical that Congress respond to their issues. That is why this week I joined with my colleagues to restart the Suburban Caucus - to fight for these suburban families.

The economic relationship between the United States, Mexico, and Canada is vitally important to the overall success of folks across our nation. In recent years, however, I believe that this relationship was not an equal give-and-take between all three partners but instead the United States was contributing more than our two neighbors. In an attempt to right this wrong, President Trump has negotiated the United States-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement (USMCA).
