Office of Personnel Management

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) oversees federal employment and retirement, life and health insurance, and survivor benefits. Members of Congress are prohibited by law from involvement in personnel decisions, but inquiries in the interest of ensuring that proper procedures have been followed in the resolution of disputes is permitted.

I am often contacted by constituents regarding their OPM benefits, particularly as it relates to the timeline for getting their benefits processed. OPM has provided my office with the following information regarding timelines:

• Simple requests such as direct deposit requests can be generally handled within 30 days.

• Survivor benefits generally have a 60 day processing time.

• Retirement benefits can take 60-120 days to process.

• The Court Ordered Benefit office has a 9 month backlog.  This office handles any case which has a court order such as divorce.

Please note that these are very general timeframes.  Some cases are more complicated and due to the nature of some requests the process can take much longer.
