Wittman's Weekly: Merry Christmas

Friday, December 25, 2020

Today, on Christmas, we celebrate hope.

As we look back on 2020, it is safe to say that this has been one of the most trying, monumental, and unprecedented years our nation and world have faced in recent memories. Throughout this year, we have faced many hardships and adversities, yet we have made it through. While we are still on a long road to recovery, there is hope. The hope of a vaccine, the hope of economic recovery, and the hope of a new year.

The world at the time of Jesus' birth was also in need of hope. Israel was controlled by Rome, the latest in a long line of occupiers, and the family of Herod the Great rose to prominence in the region. The Jewish people were under Roman rule, taxation, and the tyrannical reign of Herod.

It was during this dark time that the light of Christ entered the world. Not with fanfare and grandeur, but with humility and reserve. Today, we celebrate the birth of Christ and the hope that entered the world with Him and his story. The words of John 1:5 say it best: "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot overcome it."

This year has been hard, but the light shines through the darkness. Hope lives on. There is still much work to be done, but together, by listening to each other fully, we will come through these times stronger than ever.

It is my top priority to listen to you and hear you.

Though at times it is hard to see past a nation and world divided, we must always recognize the good that surrounds us.

To our troops overseas, our men and women in uniform, and to you and your family, I wish you all a Merry Christmas!
