Legislation provides continuity for troop, federal worker pay

Washington, DC – Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-1) today supported legislation passed by the House of Representatives containing provisions to fund the federal government for an additional seven days to allow spending negotiations to continue, and to ensure our men and women in the military serving the our nation around the world would continue to receive their paychecks.

"Today, I supported this legislation to avoid a government shutdown and ensure the troops fighting across the globe for this nation do not have to worry if their paychecks will arrive to their families at home," Wittman said. "I firmly believe that the federal government must tighten its belt, but believe we can avoid a massive government shutdown and uncertainty for families across this country. As I have said, it is unconscionable to not pay our men and women who are risking their lives overseas to protect our freedom.

"There is no doubt that government spending is out of control. Spending has skyrocketed. We must make the tough decisions to prevent a disaster down the road, for our children and grandchildren. This bill keeps our government open, funds our troops, and cuts spending. I urge the Senate to pass this legislation to stop this uncertainty, and to honor those troops who protect our freedom at home and abroad."

This legislation passed out of the House today would fund the Department of Defense through October 1, 2011. In addition, the bill would provide funding, including $12 billion in cuts, to keep the government operational for one week, through April 15, 2011. Additionally, Wittman supported legislation last week to prevent Members of Congress and the President from receiving their salary in the event of a government shutdown.
