Wittman Supports Obamacare Repeal, Calls for Passage of True Health Care Reform

Wednesday, July 11, 2012

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-1) released the following statement today after the U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation with a bipartisan vote to repeal the health care overhaul, or "Obamacare":

"I voted against the health care overhaul two years ago and continue to support its repeal with my vote again today," Wittman said. "This massive, over-reaching law did not reduce the cost of health care in the last two years, and has and will continue to add hundreds of billions to the federal deficit if nothing changes. The Supreme Court confirmed this law is a tax on middle class individuals, families, and small businesses – a tax we cannot afford.

"That's why I continue to support efforts to replace the law with legislation that truly will: address health care costs, increase access to care, protect the patient-provider relationship, provide access to care for individuals with pre-existing conditions, ensure children can stay on their parent's plan up to the age of 26, direct meaningful medical tort reform that reduces provider insurance rates, expand the sale of insurance across state lines to bring down costs, and ensure health care decisions are being made between the patient and the doctor, not by the government or insurance agencies."

"Today's vote to repeal the bill is just the first step; Congress must work not simply to do away with these harmful provisions, but to replace them with these reforms for individuals, families and small business. Health care is personal, and affects every American. Congress has the obligation to get this right. I will continue to fight for true reform."

Congressman Rob Wittman represents the First District of Virginia. He serves on the House Natural Resources Committee and the House Armed Services Committee where he is the Chairman of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee.
