Wittman Statement on U.S. Economic Decline

Thursday, July 28, 2022

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-01) released the following statement in response to today's report's that the U.S. economy shrank at a 0.9% annual rate last quarter – marking the second straight quarterly decline in Gross Domestic Product (GDP):

"This morning, the Department of Commerce reported that the U.S. economy shrank at a 0.9% annual rate last quarter - marking the second straight quarterly decline in GDP and meeting the criteria of a recession. Unfortunately, we saw this coming. Over a year ago, my colleagues and I began sounding the alarm on Washington Democrats' excessive spending and warned of the devastating impacts it would have on the economy. Now it is hardworking American families and businesses struggling to make ends meet who suffer the consequences. These are not just numbers – all Americans feel the very real pain of the Biden Administration's economy. The time is long overdue to enact smart, common-sense policies that empower workers and bring relief to American families. Americans deserve leaders that understand their very real struggles and that will work on policies to bring down soaring costs and put our nation back on a path of economic recovery."
