WASHINGTON – Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-1) issued the following statement in response to the President's nomination of Judge Merrick Garland to serve as the next Associate Justice of the Supreme Court:

"Under our Constitution, the President has the power to choose a nominee, but the Senate has the prerogative not to confirm that nominee. That's the way our Founder's intended it, and it's what separation of our three branches of government demands. Historically, people on both sides of the aisle have argued that it's best for the Senate not to take action this close to a Presidential election. That's because this shouldn't be a decision about politics, it should be a decision about what the American people want. I fully support Leader McConnell and Chairman Grassley's decision not to move forward with the confirmation process."

Congressman Rob Wittman represents the 1st District of Virginia. He serves on the House Natural Resources Committee and the House Armed Services Committee, where he is Chairman of the Readiness Subcommittee.
