Wittman Statement on President's Announcement to Drawdown Troop Levels in Afghanistan

Thursday, June 23, 2011

Washington, DC – Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-1) made the following statement in response to President Barack Obama's announcement to drawdown troop levels in Afghanistan:

"Any success in Afghanistan must be credited to our men and women in uniform who have made the ultimate sacrifice, and those who continue to serve in support of this nation and democracy around the world. They deserve our utmost respect, and our ultimate goal is to return the troops home to their families. However, I am concerned that our objectives in Afghanistan, especially with regard to troop levels, are being driven by math and politics, not military strategy. I believe we must listen to our commanders on the ground, to ensure that we do not reverse the fragile progress that has been made against those who wish to do us harm. Ultimately, we must act in the best interest of the safety of our troops and the security of this nation."
