Wittman Statement on Iran Agreement

Wednesday, July 15, 2015

WASHINGTON – Readiness Subcommittee Chairman Rob Wittman (VA-1) released the following statement today regarding the proposed agreement on Iran's nuclear program:

"A more peaceful and tolerant Iran is certainly in the best interest of the United States and Israel. But simply wishing peace and tolerance upon a nation shown to lack a desire for both does not suddenly make it trustworthy, and the U.S. must remain wary of Iran's intentions.

"Iran has proven itself willing to break the terms of previous deals, and I fear this agreement lacks sufficient safeguards to prevent the Iranian government from continuing its pursuit of a nuclear weapon. The national security of the U.S., Israel, and our other partners is at stake, and there is no room for error. I have said repeatedly that a deal must include certain critical elements, including full inspections and a complete elimination of both Iran's stockpile and its capability to manufacture weapons-grade plutonium. It is essential that any final deal effectually prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

"I am also discouraged that the president has already indicated an aversion to substantive congressional input and oversight. Regardless, the people of Virginia can be assured that I will thoroughly review the provisions of the agreement and fight for policy that truly protects our national security interests."

Congressman Rob Wittman represents the 1st District of Virginia. He serves on the House Natural Resources Committee and the House Armed Services Committee, where he is Chairman of the Readiness Subcommittee.
