Wittman Response to Economic Impact of Defense in Virginia Report

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-01), released the following statement in response to the release of the Virginia Secretary of Veterans and Defense Virginia Military Factbook:

"As a Senior Member on the House Armed Services Committee, I understand that the work we do in Congress is critical to the well-being of the Commonwealth of Virginia. This week's release of the Virginia Military Factbook, confirming defense spending as 19% of the Commonwealth of Virginia's economy – the highest proportion of any state - emphasizes that national security is economic security. Our defense investments not only help our armed services meet the changing threats we face globally, but also have real implications on the daily lives of Virginians.

"Virginia is also home to over 780,000 veterans and military retirees who rely on prompt and reliable services and benefits. I am proud to represent our nation's veterans, servicemembers and their families to ensure that the work we do in Washington keeps their needs at the forefront of our decision making.

"This Congress, I will work tirelessly to ensure that our defense budget reflects both the threats facing our nation globally. I applaud the Governor's office and the office of the Secretary of Veterans and Defense Affairs on this report that further emphasizes our need to build a robust and comprehensive budget that supports our armed services, servicemembers, veterans, and our nation's economy."
