Wittman Protects Second Amendment Rights

Friday, December 31, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-01) announced his support for an Amicus Brief along with 174 of his House Republican colleagues urging the court to overturn a New York state law infringing on an individual's Second Amendment rights.

This amicus brief was sent to the Supreme Court of the United States in support of the petitioners in the case of New York State Rifle and Pistol Association (NYSRPA) v. Corlett. The New York State law in question is the Sullivan law, signed into law in 1911, which effectively eliminates individuals' meaningful exercise of their Second Amendment right when outside of their home.

"As a gun owner and strong supporter of the Second Amendment, I believe that the Constitutional right to keep and bear arms must be rigorously protected in all aspects," Wittman said. "This includes the right for citizens to carry a firearm outside of their home. No law-abiding citizen should ever be denied their Constitutional rights, and I am proud to say that this amicus brief is a positive step to ensure the full protection of an individual's Second Amendment right. I will always stand up for my constituents' and all Americans' Constitutional rights, and I am committed to preserving the right of all law-abiding individuals to purchase, possess, and use firearms for legitimate purposes."
