Wittman, Courtney Honor Centennial of Navy Aircraft Carriers

Sunday, March 20, 2022

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-01) announced his resolution, introduced with Representative Joe Courtney (CT-02), honoring the Centennial of Navy Aircraft Carriers. On March 20, 1922, following a two-year conversion at Norfolk Naval Yard, the former USS Jupiter (Collier #3) was recommissioned as the United States Navy's first Aircraft Carrier USS Langley (CV 1).

"For 100 years, Aircraft Carriers have served an invaluable role in the defense of our nation," said Congressman Wittman. "As they have modernized throughout the years, Aircraft Carriers have adapted to be able to provide warfighting capabilities across the full spectrum of conflict. In a time of Great Power Competition, Aircraft Carriers will continue to be the preeminent conventional power projection platform that our Commander in Chief will use in times of conflict to ensure stability and peace throughout the world. Today is an especially exciting day for Virginia, as Aircraft Carriers are exclusively built and in the Commonwealth. I am honored introduce this resolution with my colleague, Representative Joe Courtney, to celebrate the Centennial of Navy Aircraft Carriers."
