Wittman, Brownley’s Advancing Water Research and Collaboration Act Passes Committee
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-01) and Congresswoman Julia Brownley’s (CA-26) bipartisan Advancing Water Research and Collaboration (AWRC) Act was favorably reported out of the House Natural Resources Committee. This bipartisan legislation will strengthen the critical partnership between states and the federal government to coordinate, plan, organize, and conduct research that addresses state and regional water problems.
"Reliable water research is essential to protecting our natural resources and ensuring communities have the tools they need to address evolving water challenges," said Rep. Wittman. "I am pleased that the House Natural Resources Committee advanced AWRC, which strengthens the longstanding partnership between states, universities, and the federal government to develop practical, science-based solutions that improve water quality, strengthen conservation efforts, and benefit communities across Virginia and the nation."
“The AWRC Act supports research and education initiatives designed to improve the scientific understanding, management and sustainability of water resources. I thank Vice Chairman Wittman for his leadership on an important issue for both his district and our nation.” - Chairman Westerman
Background:
The Water Resources Research Act Program, authorized by section 104 of the Water Resources Research Act of 1984, established a network of Water Resources Research Institutes (WRRIs) in each state that work to address state & regional water challenges with federal funds. The AWRC Act would reauthorize this network of research institutes to address state & regional water challenges with federal funds. These research institutes are typically housed at major research universities, ensuring each state is well-equipped to manage its unique water challenges. Senators John Boozman (R-AR) and Mark Kelly (D-AZ) have introduced companion legislation in the United States Senate. AWRC awaits consideration on the House floor.
