Wittman Advocates for Upper Poquoson Avenue Sidewalk Project Funding
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-01) highlighted the inclusion of his $809,000 funding request for the City of Poquoson's Poquoson Avenue Sidewalk Project through Community Project Funding (CPF) in the Fiscal Year 2027 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Act. This measure has been approved by the House Appropriations Committee and awaits passage on the House Floor.
During the August district work period, Congressman Wittman is traveling across the district to meet with local leaders and discuss his efforts in Washington to secure federal investments for Virginia's First District.
“Pedestrian safety is critical for ensuring residents have access to schools, businesses, and other essential services,” said Rep. Wittman. “This funding for the City of Poquoson would ensure that sidewalks are safe and that the community has reliable infrastructure that residents can depend on every day. I look forward to supporting this measure on the House Floor.”
"A true public servant, Congressman Rob Wittman has earned a decades-long reputation for leading by example, from the front. We are grateful for the personal interest he has demonstrated in the City of Poquoson, and for his efforts to secure federal funding for the construction of a sidewalk along upper Poquoson Avenue. The safety and well-being of our citizens is paramount. The federal funding supported by Congressman Wittman will help facilitate expansion of our sidewalks to improve pedestrian safety, accessibility, and connectivity within our community which is a longstanding goal of our citizens and local government leadership." - David Hux, Mayor, City of Poquoson
“We very much appreciate Congressman Wittman’s help in making this important pedestrian safety project a reality. Working together with Congressman Wittman and our entire federal delegation, we are thrilled to be able advance one of the City Council’s Strategic Objectives – develop and implement a multi-year plan to expand sidewalk and improve pedestrian safety. The Upper Poquoson Sidewalk Project is the second such project undertaken by the City of Poquoson since the adoption of the Strategic Objective a little more than a year ago.” - Randy Wheeler, City Manager, City of Poquoson
The funding would be used to construct sidewalk infrastructure along Upper Poquoson Avenue to improve pedestrian safety, accessibility, and connectivity within the community. This project has strongly demonstrated community support, including public input at City Council meetings and local advocacy efforts. It addresses a clear need for safer pedestrian accommodations. By providing dedicated space for pedestrians, the project will reduce the risk of traffic-related injuries and associated public safety costs, while promoting active transportation and healthier lifestyles.
Community Project Funding (CPF) allows Members of Congress to bring tax dollars back home for district-specific priorities. Members have firsthand knowledge of their district’s needs and can prioritize federal funding for the most critical local projects. For Congressman Wittman, these projects address clear and present needs in communities across Virginia and enjoy broad community support. The federal dollars designated for CPF projects exist within existing budget limits. Community Project Funding gives Congressman Wittman the ability to empower Virginians by ensuring they have a critical voice in directing their federal tax dollars back into VA-01 communities.
